Martin Hennessy is best known as a composer for the voice with a growing catalogue of art song, chamber music, opera and music-theater. He has received numerous awards and commissions and actively contributes new and exciting music to the contemporary vocal canon. His song cycle Renascence sets the long poem that won a teenage Edna St. Vincent Millay worldwide critical attention in 1912. It is a journey through self, other, death, re-birth, and spiritual awareness with the soprano as central narrator and the other voices as aspects of her imagination that echo, support, and ventriloquize the different chapters in her remarkable story.
